Edmond, OK Sedation Dentist
Conscious sedation is a valuable tool on your journey toward facial rejuvenation. Whether you’re undergoing implant surgery or multiple treatments for your full-mouth reconstruction, you may need to spend considerable time in a dentist chair. Our sedation options allow you to remain comfortable and carefree while getting all of your restorative work done in the most efficient manner.
Benefits of Sedation
Conscious sedation allows you to fully relax during your dentist visit, making your treatment a pleasant experience. It is particularly helpful when you need lengthy or multiple treatments. Because sedation keeps you in complete comfort for the duration of your treatment, you’ll be able to withstand longer treatments without a care. This way, you can get multiple treatments done in one appointment, helping you to achieve your aesthetic goals faster. Another way that conscious sedation saves you time is by allowing Dr. Cha to work with the utmost efficiency, having already entirely taken care of the priority of your comfort.
Types of Sedation
Dr. Cha offers three types of sedation: nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation. He will help you find the best type to meet your needs. With nitrous oxide, you will feel detached and relaxed. With oral and IV sedation, you may not even remember your treatment. Local anesthetic is always also used to ensure that you feel no pain.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, a sedative gas mixed with oxygen, benefits patients with mild dental anxiety. Also known as laughing gas, you will breathe it through a nose mask while Dr. Cha works on your teeth. It induces a relaxed state that seems to strengthen the novocain and eliminate the stress of the dental appointment. Under laughing gas, you may feel happy but will still feel calm and able to respond to Dr. Cha.
Nitrous oxide takes effect and wears off quickly. At the end of the procedure, you breathe pure oxygen for a couple of minutes, and all the effects are completely gone. Nitrous oxide is convenient and has no after-effects, so you can return to work or drive home after treatment.
Oral Sedation
If you need a stronger sedative, oral conscious sedation is popular. We will provide you with a pill before your appointment. This will make you sleepy so that you will be completely relaxed and indifferent to the dental appointment. You may not even remember the procedure. Effects linger past the appointment, so you will need to have someone bring you to the office and drive you home afterward.
IV Sedation
The strongest level of sedation we offer is through IV. Dr. Cha is one of a few dentists with an IV sedation permit and is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. While IV sedation is deeper than oral sedation, you are still conscious, and your protective reflexes are functional.
Under IV sedation, you feel deeply relaxed and it may feel like you are asleep. Most people can still respond to Dr. Cha but may not remember their treatment. This is not the same as general anesthesia because you will not be unconscious.
Experience & Credentials
Dr. Jerome Cha has been practicing sedation dentistry since 2009. He is certified by the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, the leading institute in dental sedation instruction, and follows all of the organization’s standard safety precautions. He also has a special permit for IV sedation and is ACLS-certified. When you are under conscious sedation, your safety is our top priority. As an extra safety measure, we will carefully measure your vital signs with a pulse oximeter during IV and oral sedation procedures.
Our Process
Before prescribing sedative medicine, we’ll review your medical history thoroughly. You’ll let us know of any medical conditions or medications you are taking. This is an important step, as certain medications or health issues can interfere with the efficacy or safety of sedative medicine. Common contraindicating conditions include:
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Heart conditions
- Kidney problems
- Liver problems
- Sleep apnea
- Breathing problems
- Problems with metabolizing medication
Based on your medical history, Dr. Cha will determine the right treatment for you.
