Edmond, OK Porcelain Crowns
Crowns are an important part of our age-reversing dental restorations. Each crown is custom-crafted from modern, high-quality ceramics selected for their beauty and strength. Here’s a look at the different materials we use to ensure that all restorative work blends in seamlessly with your smile to support your facial aesthetic goals.
The Aesthetics of Porcelain
Dental porcelains come in many different specifications to meet various functional requirements and individual aesthetic goals. Selecting the right combination of porcelains and working with highly trained ceramists, technicians, and clinicians in cosmetic dentistry are vitally important for achieving final restorations that combine beauty and longevity.
Porcelain is the premium material for aesthetic dental restorations. This is due to its ability to mimic the translucency, color variation, and light reflectivity of a natural tooth. And — even better than a natural tooth — a porcelain crown won’t stain.
On its own, porcelain doesn’t possess the strength of an actual tooth. A porcelain crown derives its strength from the foundation to which it is bonded. In the past, most cosmetic dentists used crowns composed of porcelain fused to a metal framework. This resulted in a strong restoration, but not a very aesthetic one, as there was no way to give a crown with an opaque metal core the translucency of a real tooth.
Our Porcelain Crowns
Fortunately, the modern technology we have today allows us to create crowns that are both strong and truly beautiful. Most of our crowns are e.max, a brand of crown made of porcelain bonded to a framework of lithium disilicate, a type of high-strength ceramic. The lithium disilicate core in an e.max crown is crafted to match the basic tooth color. The porcelain layered over top gives the crown all of the color variations that are present in a natural tooth. The result is a natural-looking and very aesthetic restoration, perfect for any tooth in your smile zone.
Occasionally, an even stronger crown may be needed for a posterior tooth. In these cases, we use zirconia, an exceptionally strong ceramic. Monolithic zirconia — that is, solid zirconia — can’t fully mimic the translucency or color variation of a tooth, so these types of crowns are only used when necessary and never in the smile zone. Where exceptional strength is needed and aesthetics are a concern, a layered zirconia crown that is overlaid with porcelain can be used.
Our use of high-strength ceramics allows your restorative work to be completely metal-free to ensure premium aesthetics as well as to accommodate any metal sensitivities you may have.
Our Process
Here is how our porcelain teeth are made to mimic nature.
-
A tooth is hand-carved, either from wax or using a digital printer.
-
Base opacity porcelain is replicated from the initial design.
-
Layers of tints and porcelains are baked to mimic nature.
-
Final glaze and surface textures are added and polished.
The example below shows how a missing front tooth is restored with a dental implant followed by a porcelain crown.
